Tourism

The Okanagan Valley tourism industry has evolved to a world-class level, and is key to the economy of Kelowna and the Central Okanagan (RDCO). What used to be a summer tourist destination known mainly for its exceptional weather and activity around the lake, is being discovered for the depth and quality of its year-round tourism experiences. The diverse landscapes – forested mountains that merge with orchards and vineyards - and moderate climate offer much to see and do for nature lovers, adventurers and sports enthusiasts. The area’s tourism product is a major factor in the area’s commercial successes and an important reason Kelowna is one of the fastest growing city in British Columbia.

The warm, dry Okanagan summer sees an average temperature of 27 degrees C (86 degrees F) and continues to support the strongest tourism season. Families return to the Okanagan year after year for summer vacation, enjoying the clean, accessible beaches and virtually every kind of water-related activity. In recent years waterparks, in-line skating, trick bike parks and putting greens have been added, and festivals and events take place throughout the season.

Mild winter temperatures - an average of 9 degrees (32 degrees Fahrenheit) - combined with proximity to the Monashee Mountains provide ideal skiing conditions and support a strong winter tourism season. Two world-class resorts – Big White and Silver Star Mountain, which recently merged to provide nearly 6,000 acres of skiing and boarding terrain, serve the area. Both are less than a one-hour drive from Kelowna.

Exceptional tourism experiences in the shoulder seasons are attracting increasing numbers of visitors. From March through November, 53 golf courses – including five championships courses within a 45-minute drive of Kelowna - cater to golfers of all skill levels. The area’s courses take full advantage of its varied terrain.
