The Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology (MJTT) invites you to participate in one of three workshops on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) for the agrifood sector. The CPTPP workshops will take place in the following locations:

Kelowna | June 25, 2019

Kamloops | June 26, 2019

Lower Mainland | July 10, 2019

This is an opportunity for B.C. companies in the agriculture and agrifood sector interested in exploring and expanding their exports into the CPTPP markets.

Why attend the CPTPP Workshop?

  • Agrifood market intelligence on Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, and Malaysia
  • Overview of the CPTPP
  • Newfound benefits of trading with CPTPP markets
  • A panel discussion and Q&A to follow with successful agrifood exporters
  • Networking opportunities with other B.C. agrifood companies

The Government of British Columbia is working to make sure that businesses in regions across the province are aware of opportunities through the CPTPP and other developments in the domestic and international trade environment that may impact them. This workshop will focus on the Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Japan markets as the Province of British Columbia has trade and investment offices in these countries that can provide in-country assistance to your business. Also present at the workshop will be representatives from both the provincial and federal levels of government for trade facilitation services and follow-up.

What is the CPTPP?

The CPTPP is a trade agreement between 11 countries and has been ratified by seven of its members (Canada, Japan, Singapore, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and Vietnam). Once ratified by the remaining four countries (Chile, Peru, Malaysia, and Brunei), it will give B.C. companies preferential access to a trading bloc of 10 countries with 458 million consumers and 13.5% of global GDP.

The CPTPP is advantageous for B.C. companies because it:

  • Opens up new markets for agricultural commodities, beverage, and for the food processing industries, including pet foods.
  • Gains from tariff elimination and improved market access for Canadian agriculture and agrifood in the CPTPP are especially significant in the markets of Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam. In these markets, Canada faces high tariffs. The average agricultural tariff in these countries is 17.3% in Japan, 17% in Vietnam and 10.9% in Malaysia. (Source: Government of Canada website).
