Prior to that appointment\, he was parliamentary secretary for Forests\, Lands\, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development\, where he championed the use of mass timber and innovation in B.C.’s forest sector. \nAs parliamentary secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism\, he helped restore the BC Human Rights Commission and traveled the province to build an anti-racism strategy. \nAs minister of Housing\, his focus is on delivering attainable\, affordable housing options for British Columbians. \nRavi’s love for sports and athletic competition has also shaped his outlook on life. When he was seven years old\, his father introduced him to field hockey. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: How Diversity and Inclusion is Changing Sports
DESCRIPTION:The Kelowna Chamber is thrilled to welcome Darrien McWatters\, a 2SLGBTQ+ activist and Operations Director at TIME Family of Wines\, who has also been working alongside organizations such as BC Hockey\, Hockey Canada\, and Advocacy Canada. There she is currently developing Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging programs within the hockey and sports communities. \n\nSpeaker Bio: \nDarrien McWatters discovered within herself to be transgender in 2017 at the age of 43. She came out publicly to the world in January 2018 and began her transition in late 2018. \nShe been involved in minor hockey both in Summerland and Penticton as a player\, a coach and an official. She has played since the age of 8\, and is now backstop on her women’s team\, the Trash Pandas in the Kelowna Women’s league. Her belief truly is that hockey IS for everyone! \nIn addition to playing and officiating\, she was appointed to the newly formed workgroup within BC Hockey for Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion and Belonging within the game\, as well as assisting Hockey Canada in policy changes and developing educational programming regarding inclusion\, and gender diversity and expression. Now\, as a board member of Advocacy Canada\, she encourages athletes of all ages and sports to continue their passion and help them find a place of belonging in whatever activity they pursue. \nIn the recent years\, she has created a fundraiser which supports high school graduating bursaries in Penticton and Summerland awarded to identifying 2SLGTBQ+ students or allies who work towards developing a better and safer community for those who identify. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers\, and greatly multiplies the risk for smokers. \nThe indoor levels of radon in any indoor space\, new\, old\, renovated\, office\, leisure or workplace buildings cannot be predicted. Therefore\, all indoor environment (home\, work\, leisure) space needs to be tested for radon by conducting a long-term test (minimum 91 days) during the Winter heating season\, in the lowest level of the home or building that is occupied >4 hours per day. \nEmployers are responsible to ensure a safe environment for their clients and workers. If you or your employees work in an indoor environment\, you should test your workplace for radon. \nThe 2023 radon test kit program is focused on general workplaces and Medical and Healthcare professional buildings/ offices.
